The cancellation of last year's event was a heavy blow in a year of bad news, costing the town's economy an estimated £2.7m, according to a study.

The event, which has been held annually in mid-November, since 2012, attracts about 80,000 visitors to the town in normal times .

The financial loss to the area is based on how much each visitor would spend on food, drink and gifts during the event.

The market on the Stray at Montpellier Hill features up to 200 stallholders.

Organiser Brian Dunsby said: "The aim is to review the Christmas Market plans and agree changes needed – depending on the precautions required during November.

"We hope to start inviting applications from our established Market Traders based on the same layout and prices that were agreed for 2020 before it got cancelled."
