Competing against an impressive line-up of newcomers including Knaresborough’s Rob Mulholland, Jake Donaldson, Hawkeye and Windy, Lauren Pattison, Rahul Kohli and Tony Basnett, this imposing figure with the provocative set won £350, some delicious beer courtesy of sponsors, Daleside and a spot in the Hyena Comedy Club Closing Gala at the theatre this Saturday, October 18.

A delighted Zulu said: “My real name is Peter and I’m originally from Nigeria - no I’m not the one that sent you those emails (I’m joking!).

“My material reflects my African background and my observation of the world. I tell interesting stories and I address issues people want to address but are scared to address, such as immigration.”

Among the judges of the competiton this year were journalists from the Harrogate Advertiser Series and Stray FM.

His victory certainly negates the naysayers who say Harrogate is so posh the competition should be renamed ‘Comedian of the Yar’.

MC Africa Zulu has previously won the Beat the Frog gong show in Manchester six times and Beat the Frog in Preston twice.

Away from gong shows, he has performed regular eight and 10 minutes open spots and survived 15 minutes at The Comedy Store in Manchester.
