This moving contribution to the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings will be the opening event in the society’s new season.

The centre-piece of the concert at Harrogate’s Royal Hall on Saturday, November 8 will be The Spirit of England, Elgar’s setting of Laurence Binyon’s famous poems with its unforgettable line “They shall grow not old as we who are left grow old.”

Conducted by Andrew Padmore, the concert will open with Haydn’s stirring Mass in Time of War in which the choir will be joined by a quartet of fine young soloists.
