Ripon Amateur Operatic Society was founded in this country’s ‘darkest hour’ at a time of rationing and the threat of bombing.

But audiences are about to see the light with its latest show.

The society has come a long way since it was launched in 1940 - and it’s about to launch the latest part of its 75th anniversary year celebrations with a spectacular production of classic musical Godspell.

The hit 70s rock musical is based on the Gospel of Matthew and will be brought wonderfully to life on Friday, October 9 in the splendid setting of Ripon Cathedral.

RAOS president and cast member Albert Day said the society was looking forward to the show with its classic songs such as Day by Day, Turn Back O Man and We Beseech Thee.

“This is going to be an incredible show. It’s a really exciting year for us celebrating our birthday. We can’t wait to bring audiences this production which will be memorable to say the least.”

Over the decades Ripon Amateur Operatic Society have expanded steadily, making regular improvements since they first made their debut at Harrogate Theatre in 1987 where they continue to host their annual production.

For this production of Godspell, the 40 cast members of RAOS will be accompanied by a full band with professional lighting.

It’s proving to be a memorable year for the RAOS in several ways. With the help of generous benefactors, it’s redeveloping the former British Legion building in Ripon as an all-purpose arts space for the community.

Tickets for Godspell which runs Friday/Saturday are available from Alan’s Gallery at Kirkgate and online.
