Ian McMillan’s WW1 event in Harrogate

BBC Radio 4 regular Ian McMillan will be linking up with witty cartoonist Tony Husband in a marriage of words and pictures built round the popular Barnsley bard’s latest work The Tale of Walter the Pencil Man.

The six-line rhyming stanzas tell the tale of a young Yorkshire lad from a pit village caught up in the horrors of the First World War.

In the poem, Walter experiences all the horrors of the war but keeps himself sane by drawing cartoons.

During his time at the front he encounters Lars, a German cartoonist, and the two pencil men throw cartoons to each other across No Man’s Land.

Tony Husband’s cartoons appear regularly in the likes of The Times, Sunday Express, The Spectator, The Oldie, Private Eye, Punch and more.
