Harrogate filmmakers bring award-winning climate films to the big screen

Film lovers and climate champions alike are in for a treat this summer, as two thought-provoking and inspiring films come to Harrogate Odeon for one night only.

On Wednesday 9th July, Zero Carbon Harrogate and Harrogate Film Society will host a special double screening of the award-winning short film No One Is An Island, followed by the uplifting documentary 2040. As part of Net Zero Week, this event shines a light on hopeful climate action — and celebrates creative talent right on our doorstep.

The evening will open with No One Is An Island, a beautifully animated short created by Knaresborough-based duo David Bunting and James McKay. The film has already earned international acclaim, including Best Animated Eco Film at the International Animation Film Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria (2025) and the Gabriel Figueroa Special Award at the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival. It's also been making waves on the festival circuit across the UK, Europe and the US.

Inspired by groundbreaking research at the University of Leeds, the film explores how we can live well within planetary boundaries. “We are presented with a false narrative focused on the endless pursuit of the good life,” explains Professor Julia Steinberger, who led the research. “This is the story of our research challenges.”

Filmmaker David Bunting says the story “reminds us of what living a good life means, and the power of love, courage, and creativity to spark positive change.”

The second film, 2040, complements the themes of the short with its optimistic look at practical climate solutions already underway around the world. From regenerative farming to clean energy, it offers a compelling vision of what the future could be.

The evening will end with a Q&A session featuring both filmmakers and special guests, giving attendees the chance to dive deeper into the stories and science behind the films.

“This double bill is perfectly in tune with Zero Carbon Harrogate’s vision of a positive, low-carbon future,” says a spokesperson for the group. “It’s a night to feel inspired, take action, and celebrate what’s possible.”

Tickets are now available via the Harrogate Film Society website. All proceeds will support local climate work by Zero Carbon Harrogate.
