Paul McCartney focus of Harrogate Vinyl Sessions event

Taking place on Wednesday, June 17, the album in focus will be the vinyl version of the multi-million selling global smash Band on the Run.

Band on the Run is the third studio album by Paul McCartney & Wings, released in December 1973.

It was McCartney's fifth solo album after leaving The Beatles in April 1970.

Although sales were modest initially, its commercial performance was aided by two nig hit singles – Jet and Band on the Run – such that it became the top-selling studio album of 1974 in the United Kingdom and Australia, in addition to revitalising McCartney's critical standing.

It remains McCartney's most successful album and the most celebrated of his post-Beatles works.

The fun starts at 7.30pm with organiser and hi fi expert Colin Paine, followed by a full profile from “Professor of Pop” Graham Chalmers of the Harrogate Advedrtiser along with some video action from Jim Dobbs during playback of the album in full about 8.00ish.

After the vinyl playback of Band on the Run finishes, there will be a few more hits from other Paul McCartney albums and a trip to Amplifier Mike's Workshop.

Colin Paine said: "We've put together a superb Sony 1974 age related system for this with a Sony TA1066 & ST1066 combination and spin the disc on a PS5520 turntable - the system you would have loved to play this original album on in the day!

"We run our dual platform audio stream and Zoom for the event."

Since Vinyl Sessions went digital during lockdown, previous online events have included Bob Dylan's Freewheelin Bob Dylan, REM'S Automatic For The People, Simple Minds' New Gold Dream and ELO's Discovery.

So far, the monthly Vinyl Sessions events, held at Starling Starling Independent Bar Cafe Kitchen during normal times, have raised more than £12,000 for the Friends of Harrogate Hospital charity in the last two years.
