Dark side of the internet at Salon North
By Graham Chalmers
Salon North - London’s most talked about night out brought to the north by Harrogate International Festivals - launches its latest series of events tonight, Thursday.
Entitled Innovate, Create, Motivate, the opening Salon will present a night of stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology at the Masonic Hall in Harrogate at 7.30pm.
Talking on the theme of Innovate, Jamie Bartlett, director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at the think-tank Demos, will help the audience understand how we can learn from the groups lurking in the shadowy areas of the internet on The Dark Net.
Joining him tonight will be two other two expert speakers with the right pedigree.
Renowned cultural historian John Higgs will explore how looking through 19th Century eyes can teach us to innovate in the 21st Century.
Finally, leading music psychologist Dr Vicky Williamson, will reveal how music could hold the answer to improving memory, happiness and more.
Salon was created originally by cultural commentator Helen Bagnall.
Talking about the new series, she said: “What truly motivates us? Where in our lives are we creative? How can we learn from successful innovation? These are big questions. This series has been curated to explore the big questions of motivation, innovation and creativity.”
The series continues on Thursday, May 21 when the theme will be Create.
The subject of explaining how the universe was created will be discussed with one of the UK’s leading theoretical physicists, Cambridge University’s Professor of Theoretical Physics, David Tong.
Mark Shayler, author of Do Disrupt, will then show how we are all capable of great creative work while Joanna Blythman will explain how to create wealth, health and happiness through our choice of food.
The final Salon on Thursday, June 25 will be on the theme of Motivate and will feature the Jerwood Prize winner Laurence Scott looking at how digital technologies are altering the way we act.
Entrepreneur Andy Gibson will explain his revolutionary concept, MindApples, while explorer, Felicity Ashton MBE, the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica, will discuss motivation.
