Lockdown boost: Harrogate gallery to reopen with leading environmental artist

A top Harrogate art gallery is to reopen after closing for the national lockdown in England with an exciting new exhibition which finds finds inspiration in nature..

Messums gallery at 4-6 James Street is to reopen in a Covid-secure way on Saturday, December 5 with what it describes as its most important exhibition to date in a celebration of nature during a year when we have all been re-sensitised to the importance of our surroundings.

The celebrated landscape artist and environmental campaigner Kurt Jackson will be exhibiting a show of 30 paintings artworks made out of doors which record the magnificent explosion of life he witnessed in spring this year in West Cornwall where he lives.

As passionate about recording how he sees nature as he is about preserving nature - he uses his art as a tool to draw our attention to the importance of the environmental issues he cares so much about.

All funds raised by The Kurt Jackson Foundation, a gallery space he established for local Cornwall artists, go to the many environmental charities he supports - he is a man with a mission, the medium of painting is to him what television is to David Attenborough. His 30 year career includes art residencies for the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, The Eden Project in Cornwall, Glastonbury Festival (for 20 years) as well as numerous exhibitions up and down the country including an early show in Harrogate in 1997, an artist in residency in Whitby in the same year and more recently at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2018 with a show supporting the Woodland Trust.

He spent his teenage holidays staying with family near Sheffield climbing in the moors.

Messums will reopen for the preview on Saturday, December 5 then thereafter on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am - 5pm.

The gallery is open to everybody though, in line with Government regulations, advance booking to plan your visit is recommended via www.messumsyorkshire.com
