Harrogate art gallery beats lockdown by going online with new exhibitions

But its owners haven’t given up - in fact, they say all the Messums Yorkshire exhibitions until the end of lockdown will be online and can be accessed via the gallery website.

These include two new shows of Australian offerings making a Yorkshire debut - Ethiopian born photographer and video artist Atong Atem and artist, sculptor and animator Daniel Agdag.

The latter is an artist and filmmaker based in Melbourne, Australia, who creates highly detailed sculptural pieces that have been described as architectural in form, whimsical and antiquated in nature and inconceivably intricate.

Daniel uses only boxboard, glue and a scalpel in order to become the architect of an extremely intricate universe.

The former is a South Sudanese artist living in Melbourne who works primarily with photography and video to explore contemporary identity through portraiture.

Atong is as interested in 1950s kitsch interiors, and sci-fi tropes as she is in the cultural heritage of South Sudan, Kenya and Australia – places which all form part of her own identity.

Meanwhile, despite the cold weather, arts enthusiasts may have spotted someone painting a local landscape on Montpellier Hill in Harrogate before the new lockdown.

Messums say it was actually the eminent president of the New English Art Club, Peter Brown, who is preparing for his show of Views of Yorkshire which will open online at the Harrogate gallery on February 4.
