VENUES across the district will be playing host to a new touring theatre show honouring the women who served their country working on the land in Yorkshire during the Second World War.
Thanks to a substantial grant from the Awards for All Lottery funding, the collected stories of former Womens Land Army volunteers from across Yorkshire have been collected as inspiration for the play, which is called The Land Girls of Yorkshire.
The show is the third to tour the region by Badapple Theatre as part of their innovative Theatre on your Doorstep programme, devised by directors known previously for their work at Hull Truck and Harrogate Theatre.
Writer Kate Bramley says: "We call it doorstep theatre because this is a chance for local people to come out and enjoy professional theatre right on their doorstep... to come and have a drink - either tea or stronger - and a laugh among friends close to home.
“We're delighted that the support from the Lottery has enabled us to reach further into communities and create a new show based on the reminiscences of local Land Army girls."
The show follows the comedic journey of two young women who volunteer to work for the Land Army during the war. Buff is a city girl dreaming of being “just like Vera Lynn”, Biddy is a country girl who is a hopeless romantic.
This is a family show with plenty of good humour and music, suitable for all ages but most suited to 10 years and above.
