The UK’s number one open air touring Shakespeare company is bringing one of the great pastoral comedies to RHS Harlow Carr early next month.
The Lord Chamberlain’s Men’s visit it as part of a 90-date your of the UK and Europe and follows the critical success of its last production Macbeth.
This time round they will presenting an all-male production of Shakespeare’s mysterious and romantic comedy: As You Like It.
Audiences are invited to bring along a picnic at the show on Thursday, June 6, and let the players whisk them away to the forest court of the exiled Duke of Arden.
As You Like It contains some of Shakespeare most famous lines, including perhaps his most well known speech, “all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
Mark Puddle, the company’s founder and creative director, said: “As You Like It has everything. The play’s woodland setting blends beautifully with the ornate and spectacular RHS Garden Harlow Carr.
“What could be more perfect for a summer’s evening than a classic love story combining adventure, comedy and romance?”
Founded in 2004, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men Theatre Company is the modern incarnation of Shakespeare’s original troupe of the same name.
Performing with an all-male cast, it aims to revive the traditions of Elizabethan theatre and to bring to life the greatest works of drama, as they would first have been performed.
Come and see what it looks like when a boy plays a girl, who disguises herself as a boy, and pretends to be a girl in order to woo a boy, who doesn’t know that the boy is in fact the girl he has previously fallen in love with. In turn, the girl disguised as a boy attracts another girl, also played by a boy, who doesn’t know that the object of her desire isn’t a boy.
As You Like It takes place at RHS Garden Harlow Carr on Thursday, June 6.
