The opening night of Calendar Girls at Harrogate Theatre last night saw a visit by the real Calendar Girls who inspired the play, writes Harrogate Advertiser Weekend Editor Graham Chalmers.

Before the curtain fell to rapturous applause, members of the original Rylstone Members of the Women’s Institute, whose original nude calendar for charity in inspired a film and helped raise millions of pounds for charity, stepped on stage.

CongratulatingHarrogate Dramatic Society for the success of their show, they were greeted by the HDS’s president, Brian Foster.

Those on stage included Tricia Stewart and Angela Baker’s, the death of whose husband, John, from non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1999 set the whole amazing chain of events off.

HDS is one of the first amateur production companies to be given permission to stage the play.

Praising the Harrogate amateurs’ brilliant performance, the real Calendar Girls revealed that so far 950 amateur groups had applied to perform the play.

Their visit to Harrogate Theatre comes only days before their appearance in a major charity show at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

HDS’s production of Calendar Girls finishes on Saturday night.
