TEENAGE singer and actor George Mulryan has earned himself a scholarship to a top performing arts school later this year.

The 17-year-old from Knaresborough, who attends St Aidan’s and St John Fisher Associated Sixth Form, will start a three-year musical theatre course at the renowned Guildford School of Acting (GSA) in October.

The sixth former, who is to appear in Harrogate St Andrew’s Players’ new show at the end of this month, impressed the illustrious school’s tough audition panel with his renditions of Oklahoma’s Lonely Room and the Scarlet Pimpernel’s Prayer.

George, who used to attend Harrogate Youth Theatre as a youngster, has also just landed himself the lead part of social outcast Jean Valjean in Les Miserable at Wakefield Theatre Royal this September.

He said: “I absolutely love performing and I feel very lucky to have been offered a place at GSA this autumn where I can train to hopefully enjoy a professional theatre career in the West End one day.

“I remember I performed at the National Theatre in London a few years ago with Harrogate Youth Theatre which was just phenomenal.

“All performing gives me such a buzz and it’s an amazing feeling so I’m really looking forward to starting my course this year.”

At the end of this month Harrogate audiences will have the chance to see George perform several solos in Showstoppers with Harrogate St Andrew’s Players at the Royal Hall on May 28 and 29 under the directorship of Louise Denison.

He will sing Empty Chairs from Les Miserables – a number he is really looking forward to doing - and several pieces from Sweeney Todd, Glee, Miss Saigon, Mamma Mia and more.

Having played the lead of Tony in West Side Story in a Wakefield Youth Theatre production last year, George is not unaccustomed to singing alone on stage.

“I do get nervous but I wouldn’t do it unless I loved it and Showstoppers is going to be great,” he said.
