Monkey Anna, a singer-songwriter from Wetherby, has made it through to the first round of Live & Unsigned, a major, national music competition, searching for Britain’s top new music acts.

After beating hundreds at the auditions, Anna, who shares her time between Yorkshire and Paris, will be competing at Dewsbury Town Hall on Saturday March 31 alongside other Yorkshire groups.

Anna, A.K.A Anna Brooke, said: “I was over the moon that I made through the audition stage. The Dewsbury concert is just the first step in the competition, so it’s important that I make a big impact on the judges and the audience.”

Monkey Anna’s pop songs are described as including elements of the 70s, 80s, the French Touch movement, Britpop, indie rock and even West-End musicals.

York’s BBC Introducing programme said that her sound was “infectious French-influenced pop...so addictive...it’s in your head for days.”

The Live & Unsigned competition could be a big break for Anna, who is currently preparing an EP release, with a debut album to follow shortly after that.

She said: “We’re battling it out for the chance to play at Live Fest at The 02 in London, and along the way festival and industry scouts will be looking out for new talent, so every note counts.

Anna is aware she has an unconventional style of music-making but is confident she can progress.

She said: “My pop music is quite different to most other stuff that’s out there at the moment, so I hope people will cotton on and find it upbeat and catchy.”

Her live shows usually include a visual element, too, in the form of a film called Monkey Anna TV Dinner Show shot by French-Canadian director, Pascal Chind.

“I usually include an interactive video, you can see a teaser on my website, so this will be a different set-up from usual.

“But I’m looking forward to the competition. I love writing songs; and I love performing; so if I can get that across during the concert, and make my mark doing it, I’ll be a very happy Monkey indeed!”
