FLAMBOYANT hit 80s singer Toyah Wilcox appears tonight, Friday, courtesy of local promoters Kula with the intention of wowing the crowd with a mix of famous hits and plentiful costume changes.

The striking Toyah visuals which she created in the 1980s were an innovative forerunner of the styles and approaches adopted by the hitmakers of today including Lady GaGa and Gwen Stefani.

The current tour sees the colourful Toyah play a selection of material from her first three albums, concentrating on songs from her 1981 Platinum-selling album Anthem, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer.

The actress/singer/personality has had a highly successful, prolific and incredibly diverse career, with major hit records and many stage and screen roles to her credit, which has made her one of Britain’s biggest household names.

The show, which is part of Harrogate International Festival Fringe, will also also serve as a true celebration of the peak of her chart fame in the early 1980s with tracks such as It’s A Mystery.

Another Kula show at Harrogate Theatre this weekend also features a well-known female singer, albeit in a different field.

Jazz singer Claire Martin, who was awarded an OBE recently by The Queen, is presenting the Irving Berlin songbook with famed pianist Sir Richard Rodney Bennett on Sunday, July 24.

She told the Harrogate Advertiser Series that she was delighted to be recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

She said: “It is a terrific feeling and an honour to gain such public recognition. I owe enormous thanks to my record label, Linn Records, who have given me total artistic freedom throughout my career. I look forward to keeping the jazz flame burning brightly.”

l Tickets for both shows are available at Harrogate Theatre box office on 01423 502 116 or from www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk.
