THE support act has been announced for Sir Elton John’s forthcoming Harrogate concert at the Great Yorkshire Showground in front of 15,000 fans.
Young musicians from local ‘indie’ bands may have been hoping to grab a spot on the bill for one of the town’s biggest-ever pop concerts but the world famous star has plumped for the talented instrumentalists, 2CELLOS.
The classically trained musicians, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser become internet sensations recently with a major record deal and a management contract.
They will be opening the show on Tuesday, June 5 which follows Sir Elton’s appearance the previous day at Buckingham Palace in a Diamond Jubilee event for The Queen which also includes Dame Shirley Bassey and Sir Paul McCartney
It’s not the duo’s first time supporting Sir Elton; they first joined the superstar and his band on their world tour last summer.
Heather Parry, deputy chief executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society said: “We are very much looking forward to hosting our first major pop concert and this announcement just underlines what a superb evening it will be.”
Sir Elton’s spectacular stage show at the main ring in the Great Yorkshire Showground will feature two hours of hits from his back catalogue including classics such as Bennie and the Jets, Crocodile Rock and Your Song
The meteoric success of 2CELLOS started when former cello rivals Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser decided to join forces.
In January 2011, they uploaded a unique cello version of Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson onto YouTube. Within just a few weeks, their video became a huge viral sensation, receiving over five million views.
A month later, 2CELLOS signed a record deal with Sony Masterworks and they were invited by Sir Elton John to join him on his worldwide tour.
Their self-titled debut album was released worldwide in the summer of 2011 and they appeared on national television shows including The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Fox & Friends in the US.
They have also appeared as the special musical guests on Fox’s hit TV series Glee performing Smooth Criminal in the Michael Jackson tribute episode.
Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser have both played the cello since childhood. They recently completed their studies, Luka at the acclaimed Royal Academy of Music in London, and Stjepan at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
Stjepan has also performed around the world in most European countries, South Africa, New Zealand, Asia and the USA, with debuts in London’s Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, South Bank Centre and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.
He was the last pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich. In his short career, Stjepan has already been awarded first prize in 21 national and international competitions, and he has performed twice for Prince Charles at Buckingham and St James‘s Palace.
The Yorkshire Agricultural Society owns the Great Yorkshire Showground where events take place every day of the year, except Christmas Day.
