From baroque to folk to the great symphonic repertoire, this year’s Ripon International Festival continues its tradition of presenting some of the world’s finest musicians in the sixteenth festival in September.
Winners of major European prizes such as the Bruges Musica Antiqua, baroque trio Fantasticus – Rie Kimura violin, Robert Smith viol da gamba and Guillermo Brachetta, harpsichord - from Amsterdam is performing a delectable programme of music from the French Baroque, in a Concert by Candlelight at the ancient church of St. Nicholas, West Tanfield on September 17.
Folk is provided by The Outside Track and The Carnival Band – both of which have been delighting audiences around the world with their vitality and skills. The Grande Finale at the Royal Hall on September 21 is by Royal Northern Sinfonia, under the baton of Janusz Piotrowicz, who is renowned for his profound interpretations of the great classics and romantics.
The programme consists of Mendelssohn’s shimmering, Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, Beethoven’s lyrical and majestic violin concerto with the sensational young soloist from Vienna, Alexandra Soumm, and Brahms’ sumptuous Symphony no 1 – a powerful work which reveals new marvels upon each hearing.
There’s also an illustrated talk by a veteran of the British rock guitar – Mo Foster – who has recorded with just about every great rock star (Jeff Beck, Phil Collins, Brian May, Ringo Starr, Joan Armatrading etc. ) and took part in the recent BBC4 series Fifties Britannia; Alice in Wonderland with TV stars Antonia Christophers and Noel Byrne; Dimitris Dekavallas guitar, and much more.
