The new year is shaping up to be a great one for theatre-goers at Harrogate Theatre and the town’s Royal Hall.

Top musicians, famous sporting commentators, historical drama, magic acts, ghost stories and comedy, they’re all pencilled in for 2014.

In terms of comedy, the biggest name in the early part of the year are coming our way on Monday, February 3.

Punt and Dennis who perform at Harrogate Theatre have proven equally successful over the years whether together or, in the case of Dennis on BBC TV’s Mock the Week, apart.

It’s been a long time since this popular duo first made their names on The Mary Whitehouse Experience but they show no sign of running out of steam - or laughs.

There’s also more top comedy at the regular Hyena Comedy Club which returns twice to Harrogate Theatre in February.

First up on Saturday, February 1 are comics Greg Burns, Katherine Ryan, Danny Pensive and Toby Hadoke while Saturday, February 22 has a line-up including Ian Moore, Jessica Fostekew, Mark Maier and Andre Vincent

In terms of drama, a slice of important British social history is brought to life in an entertaining fashion in We Will Be Free which runs in Harrogate Theatre studio from Thursday, February 6 to Saturday, February 8.

Townsend Productions, the company behind the acclaimed Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, re-enact the extraordinary true story of Dorsetshire farmers’ struggle against oppression in 1834 using live music, new and original songs, political cartoons and puppetry.

And that’s far from it. . .

There’s Blofeld & Baxter: Memories of Test Match Special on Thursday, February 13; presented by Nunkie, M R James Ghost Stories runs on Friday, February 14-Saturday, February 15; four of the UK’s top magicians combine in Champions Of Magic on Friday, February 14, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra blow into town on Wednesday, February 12 while Southern Tenant Folk Union perform on Saturday, February 15.
