Proms feel to Silver Band concert

Knaresborough Silver Band and St Mary’s Singers, Gracious Street Methodist Church.

There was a full house with people even sitting in the vestibule for this very enjoyable concert which raised about £800 towards Gracious Street Methodist Church’s development fund.

The Silver Band was in fine form under its dynamic conductor, Steve Morland, kicking off with the lively Muppet Show theme followed by the popular Salvation Army march Star Lake. The band’s other contributions to the evening ranged from Queen’s vigorous Bohemian Rhapsody, some splendidly disciplined playing in the traditional Russian dance Kalinka to a stirring arrangement of Men of Harlech, and every item brought enthusiastic applause. St Mary’s Singers (a small choir of 16 voices) featured equally prominently in this concert under their conductor, Carmel Wake.

There was a real Last Night of the Proms feel to things here, with everyone on their feet, singing lustily, union jacks waving and bodies swaying - a fitting culmination to this year’s Jubilee celebrations.
