Merrill Osmond of American pop band The Osmonds was in Ripon yesterday (Thursday) and stopped by for a meal in one of the city’s restaurants.

The singer and bassist of the 1970s music group formed with his brothers, who had hits such as Crazy Horses and Love Me for a Reason, visited The Jolly Fryer on Allhallowgate where he tucked into a meal of fish ‘n’ chips.

Jolly Fryer co-owner Pauline Sugden said he proved a big hit with around 40 members of Denholme Ladies Welfare Club who happened to arrive while the pop star was there.

She added: “He was so lovely. I think the ladies were more surprised than anybody.

“It’s certainly a bit different for Ripon.”

According to his official website, Merrill will be touring the UK with the Osmond Brothers with their all new American Jukebox Show from September 13-29, with Darlington and Richmond among the towns he is visiting.
