This year’s Ripon International Festival promises to be the broadest and best yet with a brand new website to boot.
Running from September 5–26, festival director Susan Goldsborough this week unveiled an impressive line-up of international musicians from symphony orchestras to folk bands, early music to classic-meets-gypsy ensembles.
As always, the events will be hosted in a variety of wonderful locations across the districtin historic buildings such as Ripon Cathedral, the Royal Hall in Harrogate, mediaeval Markenfield Hall, Newby Hall and Fountains Abbey.
Tickets will start going on sale in June.
Although the emphasis is on music, the festival’s wide spectrum also features imaginative dramas, puppetry, celebrity writers, exhibitions and guided walks.
Cornerstones of the festival will be two concerts of great classics to be conducted by the festival’s artistic director, Janusz Piotrowicz, who always inspires his orchestras to reach for the heights.
The Orchestra of Opera North will be at Ripon Cathedral on September 7 with Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Mozart’s Horn Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s thrilling Symphony no 4.
Another highlight will be Northern Sinfonia at the Royal Hall on September 21with Mendelssohn’s shimmering Midsummer Night’s Dream, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Brahm’s epic First Symphony.
The highly-acclaimed Alexandra Soumm, who captivated the audience in the festival’s sold out Spring Concert last year is coming from Vienna exclusively for this concert.
Ripon International Festival 2013 will also boast folk music by The Outside Track and The Carnival Band, baroque trio Fantasticus from Amsterdam, music at great houses: Retorica Duo at Markenfield Hall, ZRI Brahms Meets Gypsy at Newby Hall, Dekavallas – Argiros guitar and oboe at Fountains Hall; the Fairey (Aviation) Band, celebrity writer and speaker, Alison Weir, and much more.
