HARROGATE Theatre is to play host to the local debut of Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble this weekend.

Familiar to thousands of music fans as the front man in Scottish rock band Idlewild, stops off at Harrogate Theatre on Sunday October 9 as part of his national tour.

Born in Ayrshire, Roddy Woomble came to musical prominence when he formed the group Idlewild at university in Edinburgh.

The band has gone on to record and release six acclaimed albums and two compilations. Two of these albums debuted in the UK top ten.

They have released 12 UK top 40 singles (notable hits include You Held The World In Your Arms, A Modern Way of Letting Go and Little Discourage) and have toured throughout the world, as a headline act, and also as support to REM, U2 and the Rolling Stones amongst others.

A celebrated solo songwriter and performer in his own right, Roddy released his solo debut album My Secret is My Silence in 2006, winning rave reviews across both the rock and folk press.

He went on to record a second album Before the Ruin with Kris Drever and John McCusker, which was released in 2008. This spring Roddy released his new album The Impossible Song & Other Songs, recorded on the Isle of Mull and produced by John McCusker.

Roddy’s other musical involvement includes collaborations with Kate Rusby, spearheading the Ballads of the Book album, working on the Burnsong Songhouse project and being part of part of John McCusker’s Under One Sky project.

On this tour he draws on songs from the new album, along with tunes from his two previous albums, and several Idlewild numbers.

Roddy will be supported by York born and based singer-songwriter Chris Helme who briefly shot to fame as the frontman of The Seahorses, the band formed by former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire. The Seahorses released their debut album Do It Yourself in 1997, which spawned three hit singles; Love is the Law, Blinded by the Sun and Love Me and Leave Me.

Helme established himself as a solo artist with the self released debut album, Ashes in May 2008 and is currently writing a follow up, set to be issued through his own record label Little Num Num Music. He is now almost constantly on the road and now performing his own material along with hits by The Seahorses.
