The team of Jim Mossman, Charles Stewart and Jeremy Fenn won the pétanque competition, commonly known as boules, at The Pierhead (West Park).

They finally lifted the top trophy with a 13 points to 8 victory over the ‘Les Trois Fromages’ team of Sue Couture, Joyce Sedcole and Brian Preston.

An exciting match saw ‘the three cheeses’ claw back a big opening lead by Jim’s team before their dreams were finally broken with a ‘two pointer’ from Charles to secure the victory.

In the Plate Final, James Walker’s, ‘Under the Coche’, were victorious 13-7 over the U3A team skippered by Sandy McDonald.

The Saint Michael’s Spoon was won by ‘Mange Tout Rodney’ from Appleyard and Trew LLP. They overcame the WI based team of Hanque Pétanque, and pronounced ‘honkee petonkee’, by 13 points to 6. 24 teams took part in the event, and their donations have raised almost £600 for Saint Michael’s Hospice.

Club Chairman, Nigel Clay, said: “This year’s competition has been a great success and rounds off a very rewarding summer. Club membership has grown to over 50 and we have had our first season playing in a very competitive West Yorkshire League. We will be limited to daytime play over the winter and weather permitting, but we are already planning for next summer and hopeful of an even bigger entry in the Saint Michaels’ Cup 2018.”
