MORE than 130 artists will be opening up their studios as part of next month’s 2012 North Yorkshire Open Studios.

It’s a chance to enjoy a weekend discovering art in some unique and beautiful spaces, ranging from blacksmith’s forges and farmyard studios to stone cottages and suburban living rooms.

In order to help art lovers plan their routes, the public are invited to a special preview exhibition, Secret Spaces, Hidden Gems, at Royal Hall in Harrogate.

The event, which will showcase the work of artists taking part, will run from May 31 to June 17.

Among the Harrogate artists taking part are painters, printmakers, glassmakers and jewellers, as well as a varied selection of contemporary potters.

These include Anna Whitehouse who has converted her Mount Street dining room into a studio, Steph Black’s pots with their beautifully eroded surfaces, and raku fired work by Fiona Mazza and Eric Moss.

The public can also pay a visit to Richard Snowden’s farm-based studio in nearby Dunkeswick to see his vibrant paintings which feature people, animals and landscapes.

New to the event are award-winning painter Emerson Mayes, at Glasshouses, who has recently had work purchased by the House of Commons and printmaker Pam Grimmond, based in Markington, whose lino prints are inspired by architecture and nature.

This year there is a superb event programme which includes a series of fascinating artists’ installations at a range of heritage sites, these include SUPERNOVA at the Royal Pump Room Museum, Harrogate.

From June 9-June 17, artist Linda Schwab will use hundreds of vintage chandelier drops to create a dramatic installation for the circular 1842 Room.

There will also be free admission to visitors with a North Yorkshire Open Studio brochure during the open studio weekend dates.

l Full details of all artists can be found on the website http://www.nyos.org.uk and a free studio brochure can be sourced from organisers, Art Connections, tel 01756 748529 or email info@art-connections.org.uk
