Hundreds of cyclist enjoyed sunshine on blue skies in the Nidderdale countryside for the 21st Great Milk (stout) Ride on Sunday.

Organisers say the annual event was a huge success and the weather was superb.

More than 250 people took part, cycling either the ten-mile Half Litre, or or the 20-mile Full Monty route raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, with many more cheering from the side lines and attending the evening festival held at Harefield Hall Hotel.

Jackie Kerr, chair of the Great Milk (stout) Ride, said: “We had our own Grand Depart from the show ground and then a Grande Arrivee at the Harefield Hall Hotel, where there was a warm welcome awaiting riders, along with good food and live music and a real ale bar.”

She added; “Thanks to everyone – cyclists, sponsors, ride marshals and other volunteers, who gave up their time to help make this year’s Great Milk (stout) Ride such a success.”

The long running Nidderdale event was born out of a challenge to see who could raise the most money for charity among the regulars at the Birch Tree Inn, Wilsill.

The group of friends decided to donate the money raised to Macmillan Cancer Support, as a memorial to Glasshouses man John Woodhouse, who had recently died after battling Cancer.

The 21-year-old event has raised £470,000 for Macmillan since it began in 1993 with just 29 riders taking part, and organisers hope that this years fundraising efforts will tip that total over the half a milllion pounds mark.

Jackie said; “All the money we raise from the Great Milk (stout) Ride goes to Macmillan Cancer Support to help them provide essential front-line services for cancer patents and their families.

“This year we’re hoping to take our all-time total to over half a million pounds. We’ll find out whether we’ve achieved our target at the Great Milk (stout) presentation evening at Harefield Hall in November, so watch this space!”
