The teams have been announced for the 2013 Knaresborough Bed Race after a lotter draw which took place at the town’s Working Men’s Club on Wednesday, March 6.

Ninety lucky teams were chosen to take in the hugely popular summer event, along with five reserve teams, from the 108 groups who applied to take part.

The Knaresborough Lions – who organise the event – set a maximum entry level of 90 for safety reasons, but in recent years have hadto hold a lottery to chose who should have the chance to take part after more entries were received than could be accomodated.

The 90 teams who have won aplace have now been announced, along with five further reserve teams.

Knaresborough Lions’ Nigel Perry said:

“The draw was a success and it was great to see so many members of teams come along to the lottery at the Working Men’s Club.

“It is a shame we can’t accommodate everyone but it is good that so many people are so keen to take part in Bed Race.”

The groups who have been chosen to take part in this year’s race fall into several categories: including male, female, mixed, junior, fast, entertaining, and new – for those taking part for the first time,

The theme for this year’s Bed Race was announced in October last year.

Teams will be dressing themselves – and their beds – in the “Myths and Legends” theme.

Speaking in October, organiser Alan Waldgate spoke of the richness of Knaresborough’s own myths and legends, and said:

“We don’t want Bed Race teams to focus just on local matters. As we have found in the past with Bed Race themes, the broader the canvas the better the array for the pageant. We are encouraging entrants to cast the net wide through ancient history – British, Greek, Viking, Roman, Chinese, Egyptian, African, American and Asian.”
