Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama - The Open Family Class winners, he Scott family with mum Jo and daughters Isabelle and Lily.

THE first weekend of the Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama at Harrogate Ladies College produced three particularly interesting results.

The Open Family Class attracted five families. Each group needed to contain at least three performers covering two generations from the same family.

The winners were the Scott family with mum Jo playing the clarinet and daughters Isabelle (bassoon) and Lily (flute). Lily went on to come first in the Flute Solo Class (Year 8 and under).

Barrie Cooper, a former resident of Harrogate but living in Gloucester for the past 12 years spent a few days back in the town and came first in five piano classes including the Open Over 50 Class.

Meawhile the twelve-strong Dragon Saxophone Choir, winners of the Woodwind Group (age 18 and under) Class have been invited to appear in the Final Concert on Sunday 18 March.

This weekend the emphasis moves to speech and drama classes and features verse speaking, prepared reading, solo acting, group drama, musical theatre and the highly popular Old Tyme Music Hall Class scheduled for Saturday evening which has attracted 15 entrants.

They are set to sing songs such as Oh, Mr Porter, Don’t Dilly Dally On The Way and Why Am I Always The Bridesmaid?

And programmed for Saturday evening and Sunday morning are the intriguing Entertainment Classes in which entrants are invited to perform a humorous monologue.

Adjudicators this weekend are Priscilla Morris, Marie Dixon and Carol Schroder, each of whom has a wealth of experience in her particular field.

Copies of the set-piece poems for the verse reading classes can be seen on this week’s display in Harrogate Library.

Public admission for one session is £1, for one day (three sessions) is £2 and for the entire weekend is £4.
