With sport as the theme the number of cyclists in the parade was unsurprising.
Wearing jerseys of many hues they made a colourful spectacle as the parade, led by the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Pipe Band, wound its way through the crowded streets where many families were enjoying alfresco lunches in the gardens. The 3rd Harrogate Scouts won the prize for the best group in the parade.
Gala Queen, Freya Proctor, was crowned then, with help of her attendant Kaitlyn Morrell and the Mayor of Harrogate, the winners of the fancy dress competition were chosen.
In first place was Ayesha Laurie-Thomas as Tour de France, second was Torren Laurie-Thomas as a question of sport and third James Macieja a swimmer.
No sooner had the fancy dress parade concluded than an announcement was made that the Air Ambulance was on its way.
Crowds moved to the Hall Lane Field and soon afterwards the helicopter could be seen circling overhead before landing. As soon as it was safe to do so the crowds surged forward to take a closer look.
Elsewhere the ice cream vans were doing a brisk trade and people sat on deck chairs enjoying cool drinks.
The stalls were busy and lots of fun was had trying to win prizes.
The fairground was bigger than ever and dance and bird of prey displays took place on the arena. The warm weather played its part in making this one of the best galas ever. lSee Neighbourhood News, p 62.
