RIPON Spa Hotel Croquet Club hosted the 11th Women’s Open Golf Croquet Championships.
The event is one of the few nationally for women’s singles and attracted amongst its 18 entrants the previous winner and current women’s world champion Rachel Rowe.
Six other players who had represented their respective countries at last year’s World Championships in New Zealand were also in attendance.
The competition was played over three days starting with three blocks of six players who each played against the rest in the block.
The top two from each block plus the two highest runners up then progressed to the quarter finals.
The remainder of the players went into a plate competition where they played each of the other nine.
The plate was won this year by Jane Pringle from Bishop Auckland Club.
The quarter finalists included six English based players, one from Finland and one representing the USA.
Rachel Rowe was beaten in the semi-finals by fellow England player Sue Lightbody who was a newcomer to this event.
Local girl, Samantha Thompson, Managing Director of the Ripon Spa Hotel and also a current England International swept past her opponent in the semis then in a very tense and well fought final overcame Sue Lightbody to take the championship.
Other Ripon club members who took part this year were Daphne Pepler and Maggie Cowman, who both managed to pick up games against players far more experienced, so a good weekend for the club.
