Swimmers steeled for Sheffield test

Ten swimmers from Harrogate District swim club will attend the Age Group and Youth National Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield over two weekends.

The Age Group Championships began on Thursday and continue through Monday with the Youth Championships running next Wednesday to Sunday.

Brandon Chan, 14, who had an impressive showing at the recent North East Regional Championships, will be swimming six individual events. Brandon has qualified for the 100m butterfly, 100m and 200m free and 100m and 200m backstroke events. Brandon will be competing at least once every day of the Championships.

Eleven-year-old Ruth Marley will be swimming the girls 11 Year 200m backstroke at her first National Championships. Ruth, the current Yorkshire Champion in this event, will be competing against the other 21 qualifiers for a spot on the podium.

Mats Crisp, 13, will be swimming at his second National Championships. Mats will be swimming the 200m butterfly, the same event he won at the Yorkshire Long Course Championships in February.

The Harrogate club are also be sending two relay teams this year; Boys 4x100m free relay and the 4x100m medley relay. Both teams finished in the top 30 in the country at the end of season regional meets which qualified them for a spot at Nationals.

The relay teams, comprised of Brandon and Mats as well as Oliver Bell (14), Matthew Law (14) and Joe Porter (14) will be hoping for a place in the finals.

Lucy Budimir will be leading the club at the Youth National Championships. Lucy, who was national champion in the Girls 200m breaststroke two years ago, will be competing in both breaststroke events (100m & 200m) as well as the 200m and 400m individual medley.

Lauryn Dean will be swimming the 50m and 100m freestyle events as well as the 100m Back. backstroker Julia Scrivin, who is competing in her last year with the club, will be swimming the 100m and 200m backstroke.

New Harrogate Club disability swimmer Danielle Bailey, 13, will be competing at her first Youth Nationals swimming the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke events.
