Director of rugby Mike Aspinall said Harrogate’s thrilling victory in Thursday night’s Yorkshire Cup final was down to his squad “wanting it more” than opposition Wharfedale.

Harrogate shocked the National One side 16-12 at West Park Leeds, thanks to Sam Bottomley’s second half try and Callum Irvine’s perfect kicking.

The win gave Gate a first county triumph in 12 years, on the 110th anniversary of their very first Yorkshire Cup final.

Aspinall spoke to the Harrogate Advertiser Series shortly after the match and said the victory capped a momentous season for the club on and off the field.

He also said he was under instructions to fill the trophy cabinet at the club’s new Rudding Lane base, with the Yorkshire prize set to take pride of place.
