Ripon's U-17 Yorkshire Cup win

RIPON U-17s are on top of the world after lifting the Yorkshire Cup with a stunning performance which saw them beat West Park Leeds 10-8.

The Mallorie Parkers were white-hot from the start.

Within minutes of the kick off, West Park Leeds were penalised in their own half.

Guy Watkinson then struck the ball beautifully through the posts and Ripon took a 3-0 lead.

Both teams then proceeded to play some great rugby, with both putting several phases of quality rugby together only to lose the ball at the crucial moment.

Just before half-time, West Park scored three points from a penalty which Ripon had conceded inside their 22m line to take it level into the break.

In the second half, Ripon had a few good breaks and looked more likely to score than their opponents.

Callum Findlay finally crossed the line for a well deserved try.

Again, Watkinson slotted the kick over to make it 10-3.

As the game moved to the last five minutes, the tension grew and grew.

West Park threw everything at Ripon in a bid to get back into the contest.

With four minutes to go West Park scored to make it 10-8, but failed to get the two points needed to make the scores level.

With the referee calling last play Ripon were awarded a penalty.

This enabled Ben Nabarro to finish the game by kicking to touch and seal a magnificent victory.

Ripon’s defence was again outstanding, as it has been all season.

Special mention went to hooker Dom Butler, playing his best game of the season.

It was a great team performance by the U-17s, and caps what has been an outstanding season for the squad.

The coaching team of Graham Christy (head coach), Richard Marsden and Chris Simpson and team manager Nick Mogridge were praised for their commitment to the side.

The result will be remembered by everyone who was present for a long time to come.
