Pippa Funnell leads the field at Bramham International Horse Trials after the opening two days of dressage.

Funnell on board her horse Or Noir De La Loge delighted the crowds late on Friday to rise above last year’s winning combination of William Fox-Pitt and Chilli Morning into topspot.

The 2003 Rolex Grand Slaw winner scored 40.6 penalty points to move exactly three points under Fox-Pitt.

Frenchman Maxime Livio, who lead the competition going into the second day of dressage, sits third on 44.4.

The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips ended the first stage of the trials one place further back in fourth on 45.6.

Sir Mark Todd completed the top five but his horse Leonidas II is more than eight faults adrift of Funnell.

Northallerton rider Nicola Wilson finished the dressage in 12th-place on board her horse Annie Clever after scoring 52.6points.

The competitors will contest the cross country course on Saturday before looking for a clear round in the showjumping in Sunday’s finale.
