Northallerton’s Nicola Wilson helped Team GB claim its second silver medal of London 2012 on Tuesday.

Watched by princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge, a nail-biting finish to the three-day eventing at Greenwich Park saw Great Britain finish second in the team event behind Germany.

New Zealand took the bronze.

Riding Opposition Buzz, owned by Sicklinghall’s Rosemary Search, Wilson, was called up to the team as a replacement for Piggy French’s when DHI Topper suffered an injury in June.

And the 35-year-old became the GB pathfinder on Monday after a stunning clear round on the cross-country course.

Backed up by a speedy clear from Zara Phillips on High Kingdom, Britain finished Monday in second place behind Germany.

They hoped to cause an upset and claim gold after the showjumping, and went very close.

Wilson had one pole down and Phillips a fence down too, but despite two stunning clears from Mary King and Tina Cook, Britain ultimately had to settle for silver.

Although Germany took gold there was some consolation for North Yorkshire. Markington’s Chris Bartle is the German team coach.
