Weaver: ignore heavy pitch
Harrogate Town manager Simon Weaver says he will maintain his team’s passing style despite the club’s ongoing pitch problems.
Town escaped with a 1-1 draw on Tuesday against second-bottom Droylsden but beat Worcester City 3-1 on their return to the CNG Stadium last Saturday (see page 93).
They face another double header this week, travelling to Gloucester City on Saturday before hosting Boston United on Tuesday (7.45pm).
Shane Killock capped off a bright start against Droylsden when his shot looped over the goalkeeper in the 15th minute.
But Town squandered the lead four minutes before half-time when the Bloods’ Matty Ward smashed home.
Weaver insisted the draw was a point gained after the away side missed late chances.
He said: “They needed to go all out and they put up a counter attacking performance.
“There was a lot to be pleased about. We just lacked a little bit of cutting edge.”
The boss bemoaned the poor surface at the CNG but says his side must ignore it.
“When the pitch was half decent we didn’t get the goals we should but when it cut up it proved to be a leveller,” he said.
“We have got a passing possession game. The ground staff have done a great job but if we don’t have a great pitch then it gives other teams a chance. “There’s no point changing the game plan halfway through the season.”
Town will be without Alan White (suspended) and Paul Beesley (injured) for the trip to Gloucester and Weaver hopes his side will cope without them.
Eighth-placed Town beat Boston 2-1 away earlier in the season but Weaver says they have to be aware of 16-goal hitman Marc Newsham.
“He ghosts into the area and we need to be on form against him,” the boss added.
Former Leeds and Chelsea youth player Michael Woods again impressed after coming off the bench on Saturday, edging closer to a starting place.
“We want to give him more time on the pitch,” said Weaver.
“He’s had a lack of match fitness and if you put him straight on a pitch like that he could get a hamstring problem.I want him to be our Jack Wilshere.”
Town haven’t kept a clean sheet for 11 games and Weaver said it puts pressure on his forwards to score.
“The goals we are letting in are all sloppy,” he said.
“ We have to make sure we are ruthless at the back. “
