Weaver hunts a win

HARROGATE Town boss Simon Weaver is praying they pick up their first win of the season sooner rather than later after a frustrating start to their new campaign.

The Wetherby Roaders slipped to a 2-1 defeat on the opening day of the campaign away at Corby Town on Saturday before Tuesday's pulsating 3-3 draw at home to Droylsden, a game Weaver described as a "great advert for non league football."

Town have a great chance to add a one to the W column tomorrow at home to Solihull Moors - a side who have become perennial strugglers in Blue Square North over the last few seasons.

However after their 2-0 victory over Blyth on Saturday, Weaver is adamant they'll be a different kettle of fish this campaign, but he still expects his side to return home victorious.

"Speaking to one or two people they are a better side this season," he said.

"They've got Junior English and Matt West up front for them and they're both a handful. We know it's going to be a difficult game.

"But at the same time it represents a good opportunity to get that first win on the board. We came close on Tuesday, we're not that far away but it will be the sooner the better for us."

Town battled back well mid week after going a goal down against The Bloods to race into a 2-1 lead before the break thanks to a brace by Liam Hardy.

Graeme Armstrong headed in the third for Town after the break before Ciaran Kilheeney scored a controversial penalty. David McNivern then levelled the match at the death.

It came just three days after their opening day defeat to Corby.

The home side made the stronger start with Dominic Roma forced into clearing one off the line.

Ben Mackey then made their possession count by firing in the first of the afternoon on 15 minutes. Corby made it 2-0 in the second period thanks to Andy Hall's header.

Town were thrown a lifeline ten minutes from time when Armstrong found the back of the net but despite a late rally Weaver's side returned home pointless.

"It was a bit of a disappointing start but we were a lot better on Tuesday," added Weaver.

"There were a lot more positive signs."

With Lee Ellington still a few weeks away from returning to the side

with an achilles tendon problem and Steve Bowey struggling fort fitness Weaver brought in striker Ryan Kendall into Tuesday's squad.

The 20-year-old was a regular in Hull City's reserve team last season and also enjoyed a loan spell at Bradford City.

Weaver is waiting on the fitness of Wayne Phillips (slight knock), Paul Talbot (back), Craig James (ankle) ahead of tomorrow's clash.
