Town set for Leeds
LEEDS United's youngsters await Harrogate Town and boss Simon Weaver on Tuesday night when the junior Whites make the trip to the CNG Stadium (7.30pm).
The clash will reunite Weaver with United coach Neil Redfearn, the pair having shared a brief spell together at North Yorkshire rivals Scarborough FC.
The Town boss also hopes it will forge further links between the Wetherby Roaders and Leeds in years to come, with the CNG Stadium the first port of call of any promising United youngsters.
Town’s opponents are unlikely to bring a side bristling with Championship talent, given their first team are at home to Lincoln City in the Carling Cup on the same night.
“Neil will be bringing his young guns with him,” said Weaver.
“The first team have got a game but we still expect Leeds to bring a good side. Hopefully there will be a big crowd down there for that one.
“If you look at the side that Leeds have brought down to Harrogate in the past, there were the likes of Harry Kewell, Noel Whelan, Andy Gray and Jamie Forester.
“There may be some stars of the future playing on Tuesday.”
Before Leeds arrive, Town continue their pre-season fixtures tomorrow with a trip to Bradford Park Avenue (3pm ko).
Meanwhile Weaver has further bolstered his squad ahead of the forthcoming campaign with the signing of midfielder Duncan Williams from Evo-Stik First Division North side Garforth Town.
“He’s a good player and he’s strong,” Weaver said.
“He could be like Dave Syers was last season, technically Duncan is as good as they come and he is a fit and strong boy.
“He was more or less full-time at Garforth and he went on trial at Hartlepool and my pal who plays right-back for them said he beat them all in the fitness test.”
Town have also recruited Paul Talbot (Gateshead) and have taken on Michael Jacklin, Andy Taylor and Danny Wright on trial.
Town looked more than comfortable on Tuesday as they reclaimed the John Smith’s Trophy thanks to a 3-0 win over Railway.
Winger Wayne Phillips opened their account after 30 minutes before Graeme Armstrong doubled their advantage on the hour.
Trialist Wright closed out the game with a 75th-minute header.
Weaver was pleased with Town's overall domination.
"I was really impressed with them (Railway)," he said
"I thought they came at us in the first 20 minutes or so and looked a really hungry side with some good players.
“Looking at the way they played I think they'll have a good season which is good for the town.
"We want both clubs to do well."
