Town’s first game at the Keepmoat postponed

Snow was cleared from the Keepmoat Stadium pitch on Saturday but a new settling on top of the covers cannot be cleared anywhere.

Snow was cleared from the Keepmoat Stadium pitch on Saturday but a new settling on top of the covers cannot be cleared anywhere.

Harrogate Town will have to wait another week to play their first game at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

Simon Weaver’s men were due to take on Workington tonight, but a late pitch inspection on Monday night saw the appointed referee call off the match.

According to an official club statement on the Town website, the pitch was fit but heavy snow on the covers and no available space to clear it to meant the game could not proceed.

It read: “After very careful consideration and liaising closely with the Stadium Manager and Groundsman at the Keepmoat the appointed referee took the decision to call off our match against Workington at The Keepmoat tomorrow Tuesday 22 January.

“The pitch is in excellent condition but the volume of snow that is on the covers and the parameter makes it impossible to shift in time for the match.

“There is an added complication in that after clearing snow off the covers on Friday and Saturday last week there is no where to clear the snow to.

“Doncaster Rovers had over 40 volunteers clearing snow last week in preparation of their match against Orient.

“The Stadium manager also reports that the access ways to the stadium and the car parks are snow bound presenting further complications. If any more pressure was needed there is more snow forecast overnight in Doncaster and plummeting temperatures.

“This is obviously very disappointing to everyone concerned with the club. However, it shows that we are all at the mercy of the weather. Details of a re-arranged date for this fixture will be issued tomorrow once we have a reply from Workington to a suggested date.”

It’s a heavy blow for Town, whose last game was the 2-1 victory at Boston United two weeks ago on January 8.

They are due to travel to Solihull Moors in the Blue Square North this Saturday.

The next scheduled game at the Keepmoat will be on Tuesday January 29, against Corby.

Elsewhere, Harrogate Railway’s County Cup semi-final against Guiseley was also postponed.

It will now take place in a week’s time on January 29.
