Stoic performances lead to victory

YOUNG rugby union players from Harrogate and Wetherby districts turned in impressive performances to lead the Grammar School at Leeds to victory in the Daily Mail Schools Cup.
Harrogate’s Max Kay, Tom Megson and Luke Powderly, Linton’s Will Newett and Jack London, Shadwell’s Jeremy Huitson and Charles Etchels, Jonny Webster and Joe Hunter of Thorner, plus Ben Townsend of East Keswick were all in the side that beat Whitgift School 17-3 to reach the competition’s semi-finals.
Leeds were the dominant force in the first half, and having gained centre field position, they found more space than closer to the Whitgift try line.
As the ball moved along the back line Tom Gorman exploited space on the wing, with left wing Chris Bridge providing the extra man.
Gorman dummied the fullback and sped his way for the first try. It was now Whitgift’s turn to reply however, a firm Leeds defence held Whitgift on the 10 metre line.
GSAL’s resistance could not hold without conceding a penalty which made the score 5-3 to the Grammar School.
As the half progressed Leeds again crossed out wide through Gorman, as good handling allowed him to out flank the Whitgift defence to score in the corner.
The second half saw a resurgent Whitgift on the attack but The Leeds pack held firm and defended the fringes stoically.
As the game entered the last ten minutes, The Grammar School was awarded a penalty, a quick tap released the backs and Gorman found a gap and sprinted for the line. A superb burst of speed saw him round the remaining defenders to seal the victory. A successful conversion followed from the impressive Ward to make the final score 17-3 to GSAL and a semi- final to look forward to at Broadstreet Rugby Club, Coventry.
