RUGBY UNION: National Three North - Harrogate 11 Macclesfield 14

A LAST minute penalty proved Harrogate's undoing as they were beaten 11-14 by Macclesfield on Saturday.

Visitors Macclesfield were awarded the kick after seven minutes of injury time.

The sides went in level at 3-3 by the break, 14-man Harrogate showing valiant defence to keep Macclesfield out after losing prop Simon Davies to the bin.

Macclesfield's Ross Whinney kicked a penalty to put the visitors ahead shortly after the restart, but Harrogate roared back with a fine try from full back Cerith Rees.

A try from Macclesfield hooker Sam Moss put them back in the driving seat, but after Whinney missed the conversion, a coolly-slotted penalty from 'Gate player-coach Mike Aspinall looked to have earned Harrogate a draw.

A long range penalty attempt from Rees was then missed as the sides played out seven minutes of injury time, only for Harrogate to concede a late penalty in front of the posts.

Whinney then kicked the three points needed to secure his side a valuable win.
