Proud hails 'Gate youngsters after York victory
HARROGATE skipper John Proud has praised his young side after they pulled off a superb win over title chasing York on Saturday.
Now he’s called on them to make it three wins in a row when they travel to Scarborough’s famous North Marine Road tomorrow (noon start).
After a poor start to the campaign ‘Gate have picked up over the last few weeks with consecutive wins over Rotherham and Saturday’s impressive display over their North Yorkshire rivals.
“Scarborough is a lovely ground and we’re going into it full of confidence and looking for our third win in a row,” said Proud.
“The last few weeks have certainly been a confidence boost to the side and everyone is now looking forward to the game.
“They’ve got some good players like Adam Lyth who plays for Yorkshire, he’s been scoring a lot of runs this season.
“Scarborough have been doing well this season but so have York too.”
‘Gate will have to make do without the services of Ross Sedgley who has left the club and joined Aire Wharfe outfit Knaresborough to bat in their top five.
Proud has also revealed batter Imran Patel- who had missed the last few games with an injury he sustained hitting a punchbag- has also left St George’s Road.
He follows in the footsteps of brother Adam who left the club mid season last year for Bradford League outfit Pudsey Congs.
On Saturday Proud (40) and Nick Lindley (37) got ‘Gate off to a positive start before James Tattersall (31) held the middle of the innings together as they posted 178 all out. York spinner Alex Renton bowled well for his 5-72.
Shazad Khan then crucially took the wicket of run-machine Dan Wilson second ball of York’s innings as the opener ripped through their upper order.
He finished with match figures of 3-20 with Nick Taylor (2-27) and Dan Craven (2-22) who scalped ex-‘Gate man Simon Mason for 73 as their opponents closed on 141-9.
“It was a bit disappointing not to bowl them all out,” said Proud.
“But nevertheless it was a really good performance. At tea I wasn’t sure if 178 was going to be enough especially with their batting.
“But Shazad bowled a really good opening spell. He got out Dan Wilson second ball of their innings and then we ripped through their order.
“The game was still in the balance when Simon Mason was at the crease.
“We thought we’d had him out caught behind but it was given not out and with him at the crease they always had a chance.
“But Dan Craven managed to bowl him out and after that the game swung back in our direction. It was a really good performance.
“York were doing really well before the game, scoring a lot of runs. To bowl like we did was very pleasing.”
