Olympic glory beckons for Harrogate dive pair
TWO members of Harrogate District Diving Club continue to eye a starring role at the 2012 London Olympics, having returned from the European Junior Championships with gold medals.
Oliver Dingley, 17, from Harrogate High School and Jack Laugher, 15, from Ripon Grammar School left Helsinki, Finland in a blaze of glory, capping off a superb tournament for Great Britain.
Jack became the first ever British diver in the 14-15 age group to take two gold medals in one European Championship.
He succeeded in the 1m and 3m springboard, also coming fourth in the 3m diving synchro partnered by Dingley and sixth in the 10m platform.
Meanwhile Oliver took gold on 1m and bronze on the 3m springboard.
This was Great Britain’s most successful junior European Championships, and both boys have qualififed for the World Junior Championships in Arizona, USA.
British Junior Diving Team leader Julian Bellan commented: “The 2010 results including four gold medals, are without question, the best junior results at European level ever. The good results can’t be attributed to just one factor. But the depth of diving talent, coupled with a confidence and self-belief is undoubtedly key.
“Special mention to Harrogate’s Damian Ball, coach of four medals including three golds to Jack and Oliver.”
Damian Ball, Diving Development Manager at Harrogate Borough Council and Head Coach of Harrogate and District Diving Club added: “Both divers have been training hard for this year’s World Junior Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
“But of course their dream is representing their country in the London 2012 Olympic Games. This exposure to senior international events is certainly paying off.”
