Laura leading the way at Boroughbridge

THE sport in Harrogate shows a healthy sign with one of the biggest tennis leagues in the county.

Seven divisions make up the Harrogate and District Tennis League which spreads its wings from Thirsk in the North to the league's West Yorkshire outpost at Ben Rhydding, near Ilkley.

Each year the league secretary Ian Hargreaves keeps a record of how players have performed during the season.

Last season's individual records have recently been completed and show Boroughbridge player Laura Gilbert heading the Division One performance table.

Laura's record in the 10 matches played for Boroughbridge showed she won 26 out of a possible 27 rubbers. Her team colleague Cathryn Johnson won 22.5 of her 28 rubbers.

In the corresponding men's chart Mark Hinchliffe (Harrogate Racquets) led the way winning 26 of his 32 rubbers.

Meanwhile The Academy's Ollie Baggaley played 13 matches, winning 31 rubbers out of 39 played.

This season Boroughbridge won the First Division title with 27 points nine more than rivals Harrogate Racquets.

Boroughbridge A were relegated to Division Two along with Harrogate Racquets A. They will be replaced by Bedale, champions in Division Two, and Ripon who finished just one point away from taking the divisional title.

Meanwhile winner of the Men's Singles was Andy Carter (Harrogate Racquets) who won the Harrogate Tournament final by defeating Frenchman Philippe Bourgeois 6-1 6-2.

The women's event was again won by Harlow player Sophie Jacob who has been the most succesful women's singles competition for the past decade.
