HARROGATE fencer Caitlin Chang took another step on the road towards possible London 2012 qualfification this week,

The 18-year-old won an individual gold medal in the women’s epee event, at the U-20s Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Jersey.

She beat Rebecca Thomas in the semi-final before overcoming Amy Radford in the final to clinch her medal.

The Sheffield University student, who previously attended St Aidan’s, was hunting a double gold in the team event on Thursday.

She will fly to Doha later this month to continue her pursuit of a place on Team GB at the Olympics.
