Harrogate pair await England call after impressing at trials
Two of Harrogate Hockey Club’s rising stars are hoping that they have done enough to be selected for the England under 18 squad after taking part in trials.
Goalkeeper Sam Swenson and midfielder Lydia Clissitt, both 17, were invited to attend two days of training at Lilleshall after impressing in regional sides and at the Futures Cup.
The pair should find out shortly whether they have been successful and are excited about what the future might hold.
“Earlier this year my goal was to get to the Futures Cup, so to get this far was amazing news for me,” explained Clissitt.
“It’s hard to tell how the trial went as the standard was so high, however I gave it my best shot.
“It would mean everything to get through but I will just have to wait and see what the selectors think.”
Over the course of the two days the girls took part in around ten hours of intense training, with Clissitt also suffering a broken nose after being hit by a ball.
’Keeper Swenson has set her sights high and is dreaming of taking part in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
“I really enjoyed the two days and it was an amazing experience. I have set my goal on the Olympics so if I don’t get in I will keep on trying,” she added.
“Everyone at Harrogate has been so supportive and I have had so much help from so many people, including coaches and players in the men’s and women’s sides.”
Both girls are now hoping to get into university and take the next step in their hockey careers.
