Harrogate fencing star Caitlin Chang triumphed for the third time to become British Junior U-20s champion at Medway Park last week.

Winning the women’s epee title at the Great Britain Junior National Fencing Championships, the Harrogate Fencing Club member started in style by winning all of her poule fights to be seeded third in the knockout round.

The 19-year-old then went on to defeat rivals Lily-Mae Trenchard 15-5, Caitlin Jones 15-9 and Leo MacKinnon 15-13 in the semi-final to set up a meeting with Jessica Grundy of Wellington Swords in the final.

Chang put in an accomplished performance to secure a 3-1 lead, and by the first break was 9-5 ahead of her younger opponent.

The second period saw the fight largely at Grundy’s end of the piste, and Chang was able to grab the title with a double to win 15-9.

It was an emotional moment for the Sheffield Hallam University student.

She said: “was really overwhelmed when I won mainly because I have retained the title from last year and this is now the third time I have won it.

“This was my last year in being able to compete in the competition so I really felt like the pressure was on to win it especially as I was the favourite to win.

“It was a great way to bow out of the Junior age category.”

Chang is delighted with her title but 2013 will be a relatively quiet year for the fencer.

“Domestically, this is a big achievement, as it is a national title,” she said.

“But for me medalling in under 17, under 20 and most recently senior internationals for me are my proudest moments.”

“2013 will hold mainly training camps as I am mainly focusing on university for this year, I’ve got a training camp lined up in the Easter, and a few abroad options for summer training.”
