Blue Square North: Harrogate Town 2 Gainsborough Trinity 0
TEN-man Harrogate Town showed the extent of their fighting spirit on Saturday, beating visitors Gainsborough 2-0 despite losing striker Peter Knox to a red card.
With both sides scrapping for survival at the foot of the Blue Square North table, the game kicked off a crucial week for Town, who visit fellow strugglers Vauxhall Motors on Tuesday night.
Simon Weaver's troops got off to a flyer, when against the run of play skipper Craig James blasted in a free kick from 25 yards out after just 20 minutes.
Gainsborough put Town under some serious pressure in the first half, but a fine defence marshalled by James, Martin Foster and Matt Bloomer held firm.
However, Town received a devastating blow seconds in the 45th minute when striker Knox was shown a straight red card for a lunge on Gainsborough right back Ryan Toulson.
But Town showed incredible spirit and determination after the restart, and despite being a player short, turned the tables on Trinity.
Only three minutes in, a superb passing sequence led to their second goal.
Winger Ben Muirhead stole the ball from Anthony Peters and surged upfield, before passing to Richard Dunning.
Dunning crossed to striker Simon Yeo, and another fine pass saw the ball return to Muirhead who sidefooted into the top left corner.
Town could have had a third through midfield man of the match Adam Nowakowski and Yeo, but the score remained 2-0 at the final whistle.
