Harrogate triathlete Jonty Bright finished in the top spot at the first of three qualifying races for his 35-39 age group at Olympic distance at Rutland water on Saturday. This means he will be racing other international athletes at the ITU world age group championships in Auckland in October later this year. Jonty has been competing in triathlon and other sporting events but decided to target the world triathlon champs this year.

A typical training day involves early morning swims, cycling 30-40 miles to work and back with a run to finish.

Jonty has been competing in Triathlon and other sporting events ranging from the Knaresborough bed race to 24-hour mountain bike events but decided to target the world triathlon champs this year.

A typical training day involves early morning swims, cycling 30-40 miles to work and back with a run to finish.

Jonty explained: “The conditions were perfect for me especially the bike which was windy and undulating and a flat run to finish led to a personal best sub-35 minute 10k.

“I was surprised to find I was won my heat and it has given the motivation I need to push for a top spot at the race in New Zealand.”

Jonty will be competing in a few local triathlons in the build up to the race including Ripon and Newby Hall middle distance race in preparation.
