He scored twice before half-time before the visitors grabbed a consolation after the interval to ensure a nervy end to the fixture.

‘Boro started on top, and Jim Bradley was unfortunate to have his headed effort cleared after eight minutes.

Bradley was then able to connect with a Paul Stansfield corner, but Rossington ‘keeper Jordan Wildey was up to the challenge.

Steve Bromley, who had scored ten goals in nine matches before Saturday, went close on 18 minutes, but his shot from distance flew over the bar.

The home side were winning every ball, and Byron Littlefair looked to be in on goal, but the linesman flagged him offside on the half-hour mark.

Littlefair looked lively, and set up ‘Boro’s first goal, as he played through to Heard, who slipped past the Rossington defence to put himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

His pinpoint shot found the bottom left-hand corner of the net to give ‘Boro the lead.

Four minutes later, Matt Donnelly hit just over the bar.

Donnelly turned provider five minutes later, as his floated cross found cock-a-hoop Heard, who smashed home to give ‘Boro a half-time 2-0 lead.

After the interval, Liam Gray had a chance to make it 3-0, but his shot flew just above the crossbar.

Stansfield was caught out on 53 minutes, as he was frustrated by Rossington’s Matt Doyle, who connected with a cross to slide home for the visitors.

Rossington then started to take control, but could not break through the well-drilled ‘Boro defence.

Dave Thomas and Bromley joined team-mates by hitting over the bar in the second period.

Rossington finished the game on top, but ‘Boro held on to take the points.

Boro now sit third in the league, level on 50 points with Albion Sports.

They travel to Dinnington Town on Tuesday (kick-off 7.45pm).
